SMS packages of cellular companies

SMS packages of cellular companies

I want to highlight an issue which many people might consider both trivial and benign, but I think its repercussions will soon unfold and perturb masses. I want to talk about the cheap and virtually free SMS and call rates offered by all cellular companies. There is no denying the fact that mobile phones and cellular companies have revolutionized our lives and have rendered ease and comfort, but the fall-outs of the current cheap SMS and call rates can not be permitted.  These special packages offered by the cellular companies have become a source of pollution, which are detrimental to the future of youth. These services are apparently beneficial for consumers, and there are few people who realize the gravity of the situation and oppose such services.
Every time we switch on TV or read any newspaper an advertisement of new voice or SMS package awaits us. Late night calling packages, SMS packages, weekend calling packages, to name a few, are very popular among the youth. This popularity is also evident when you just stroll across the dorm room in any university/college hostel and listen to future of our nation gossiping with someone on the other side of the phone. And it is no mystery that these conversations are usually with the members of opposite gender, as portrayed and promoted on TV channels (look at any cellular ad), which is against the spirit of Islam and morality of our society. Keeping the morality and Islam aside, it only frightens me to imagine all the time wasted by our youth on futile and cheesy conversations using these inexpensive late night packages and let us not forget the end result of these pillow talks. Either way, it highly unproductive and late night hourly talks, with whoever it may be, bring distraction in studies and lead to lack of attentiveness. Before the wide spread use ofmobile phone, when land-line phone was used, it was easy for parents to monitor their child’s activity but where 70% of the population is carry a handset, it gets harder for the parents to monitor the activities of their children. They can neither stop their children from having mobile phones because now it has become an integral part of our society.
According to some critics, the unlimited SMS packages are misused by people as they pay few bucks for unlimited messages. Although the people are happy with such SMS services but still it is a matter of great concern. According to Dr. Murtaza Mughal, last year approx 20 billion messages were sent whereas at present, the condition showed a drastic hike in the number of sent messages. Now, approx 10 billion messages are being sent per month. And let’s not forget the obscene jokes and all the disgraceful things in the world.
The unlimited message packages and other such services should be discouraged. There should be some fixed price for every single message. There is a need for legislation to regulate usage of the new technology.
Considering the fall-outs these services are creating, it is my heartfelt appeal to the media, and the media people to play their part in creating the awareness among the people and our youth. And above all, I feel that more than any law or regulation, it is self regulation and self awareness which give one sense of direction. I advise all my fellow people to reconsider their mobile mania and get their priorities straight.
